Decorating Your King Size Bed

Big beds need to make a big statement in your bedroom.  If you have a king size bed, a simple bedspread won’t do.  The bed looks like a big desert of space unless it is properly dressed.  Finding the right bedding and accessories for your king size bed isn’t hard, there are plenty of selections available at department stores, discount stores, decorator stores and online.  A well dressed bed is easy to achieve.

The first step is to find attractive bedding for your bed.  If your bed has a platform style frame, you won’t need a bed skirt, but an attractive comforter or spread is essential.  Solid colors will tend to make the bed look even larger.  Small patterns have the same problem.  The best choices are large patterns with bright or dark colors which will make the bed seem somewhat more in proportion to your room.  If you use a comforter, using a different pattern for your sheets will also help to break up the large space.

On a king size bed, accessories are necessary.  Use two sets of king size pillows, or two king size and three standard size pillows at the head of the bed.  Use a combination of shams and pillow cases keeping both sides of the bed symmetrical.  Three throw pillows in a contrasting color will add even more interest to your bed.

Most blanket throws look small on a king size bed, so it is better to use an extra duvet folded across the foot of the bed.  The duvet can be a solid color or print that coordinates with the main bedspread.  A duvet folded across the bottom of the bed creates interest to balance the accessories at the head of the bed.  If your king size bed frame doesn’t have a footboard,  add a bench or chest at the foot of the bed to create even more interest and balance.
